Makuzu - The beautiful pottery culture of Japan

Mainly producing pieces for use in 'Sado' (Tea Ceremony), an important aspect of traditional Japanese culture, Kousai Miyagawa, the 6th generation head of the Makuzu-yaki kiln, creates pottery at his workshop in Higashiyama, Kyoto. "We sincerely hope that people around the world will experience the beauty of Japanese pottery culture through Makuzu ware."

Makuzu-yaki Sakenomi Series

In ancient times, when Kyoto was still the capital, a wide variety of ceramics were brought to Kyoto from China, Korea, and other areas of Japan. At the time, grand tea masters such as court nobles, samurai and wealthy merchants ordered similar objects to be made by the potters of Kyoto, which marked the beginning of Kyoto ware. The craftsmen didn't, however, simply create endless copies; rather, these creative artisans integrated a uniquely Kyoto-like elegance into their works. For instance, the pieces they created were of a size suitable for tea ceremony use. They also integrated paintings of the Korin school (a unique style of Japanese design) into their ceramics. Thus, Kyoto ware developed by incorporating the culture of Kyoto into the pieces.

Here at our Makuzu atelier, we continue to create a wide variety of Kyoto ware. Needless to say, every stage of the processes we employ, from the initial forming of a work through to final painting, is done by hand. We are proud of this, as it rare on a global basis for pottery to be completely hand-made today.

It is our greatest desire that our works be highly valued worldwide, just as the works of Makuzu Kozan of Yokohama were once praised internationally.
