About MATSU Cane & Walking Stick
Yoshida's steadfastness to aesthetics, recognized by renowned European brands, Tsuge's craftmanship that takes form in artifacts where form meets function in the truest sense, and the designer's personal experience through a serious foot injury requiring the use of a cane. This Triad converged into the manifestation of MATSU Cane & Walking Stick.
As you can see from the history of the walking stick, it does not exist only as a tool to assist walking. It has been making fashionable people stand out, not only on formal days, but also on ordinary days. We aim to create a walking stick that will give you a deep sense of satisfaction in this respect.
Design, Material & Craftsmanship
Uncompromised Attention to Details
Each part of the MATSU Cane & Walking Stick has been attentively designed where form meets function to create an art piece.
Material
Something Old and Something New
The spectrum of materials we use spans from the traditional precious woods gathered from the ends of the world to those created by the latest technology. MATSU Cane & Walking Stick hand-picks the best elements for its walking sticks.
Craftsmanship
Craftsmanship Inherited from Pipe-making
MATSU Cane & Walking Stick comes to you from Tokyo's eastside, an area enveloped with the Shitamachi (old downtown) air. Here, the Tsuge Seisakusho workshop creates artifacts of recognized distinction in the field of smoking accessories, attracting the world's most discerning smokers. The company was founded in 1936.
Kyoichiro Tsuge, descended from the Kaga swordsmith Kanewaka, lost his parents at an early age and went to work as an apprentice in a cigarette holder workshop. He became independent but went off to war in World War II soon after. His wife, Tamae, is said to have carried their baby on her back as she polished the gun barrel. When he was demobilized and returned to Tokyo, the ivory for the cigarette holder was not as readily available. He embarked on pipe making, which became popular thanks to MacArthur, and had 120 craftsmen at its peak
In the 1950s, when it became possible to import brier, the main raw material for pipes, he took the initiative in contacting suppliers around the world to secure purchasing routes. He sent his best craftsmen to Europe to learn the highest level of manufacturing. One such person was Kazuhiro Fukuda, the creator of IKEBANA (the flagship model of the pipe), whose name is now known throughout the world
Tsuge is becoming more and more mature in its adherence to good old-fashioned production practices. Dimensional accuracy approaching 1/1000th of a millimeter, and hand finishing that brings out the grain of the wood clearly... the skills forged in the pipe making industry are also fully utilized in MATSU.
