Exquisite patterns & delicate colors exemplify the skill of Japanese artisans

A piece of textile heritage artwork that is also an elegant wall hanging, the Tapestry Centerpiece is jacquard woven in Kyoto with finely colored silk.

Once the exclusive reserve of nobility, luxurious woven textiles featuring this design were originally presented as state gifts, and given and received by high ranking officials. They later became presents for important occasions such as coming-of-age, marriages, etc.

Depicting a hunting scene on horseback through trees and flowers flora, the SHURYO-MON (hunting motif) travelled the Silk Road from 16th century Persia. During this period - considered the golden age of textile dyeing and weaving - Japanese artisans learned from their Persian counterparts, developing and enriching local technology and designs. Many hunting themed textile examples of both Middle Eastern and local origin are found among the Imperial Treasures housed at the Shōsō-in* in Nara.

*Shōsō-in is the Imperial Treasure House of Tōdai-ji temple, Nara, with origins in AD756. Not including items that are yet to be classified, Shōsō-in houses some 9,000 artifacts, many of which are 8th century and of domestic origin. Listed on the UNESCO register of World Heritage Sites as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, it is also a national treasure of Japan.
